However, AmpliTube’s high gain sounds were full and punchy. Mid-tier amp modellers often falter when it comes to hi gain metal sounds and clean tones. The iRig package comes bundled with the free version of AmpliTube, which contains a good number of amp profiles, cabinets and effects units.Īll of the profiles I tried sounded good. I’ve played no end of poor amp model and amp sims and I can safely say that AmpliTube does a very good job of recreating an authentic full rig sound. The AmpliTube software, however, is the most important aspect of the package, as this allows you to use your phone or tablet as the amp modeller. While it may not perform as well as more expensive dedicated pre-amp units, it costs a fraction of the price and is more than good enough for home recording and even rehearsals or small performances. The output signal was consistent and strong and picked up on the dynamics of my playing and the guitar very well for such an inexpensive unit. The iRig itself is a very high quality digital guitar interface. Some guitarists even use it as a live rig, it can connect straight to front of house, or to a FRFR speaker, recreating the modelled tone exactly. Between these two outputs you can connect to studio monitors, amplifiers, processing racks and all other manner of studio equipment. It has a ⅛” headphone jack, allowing for quiet home recording or practise. The iRig HD 2 has a number of options for monitoring and connecting to external amplifiers.

It took me a couple of minutes to set it up when I first got it – it really is as simple as plugging in, loading your amp modelling software and playing. Unlike a lot of other digital guitar interfaces, the iRig is extremely quick and easy to set up.
